Chatroulette is pointless. Let me just get that off my chest right up front. Its original intent may have been connecting random people to have meaningful chats across cultures and continents but it’s not working out that way. Let me back up. If you haven’t heard, Chatroulette is a website that pairs random strangers from around the world together for webcam-based conversations. Visitors to the website randomly begin an online chat (video, audio and text) with another visitor. At any point, either user may leave the current chat by initiating another random connection. That’s all well and good, except all you get are horny dudes with their penis out trying to iniate a different kind of connection. Penis. Penis. Penis. That’s it. It’s real achievement is helping guys masturbate online. It’s not like they had it tough before either. There is also no age protection on the site. For any random connection where a genuine innocent conversation takes place I’d guess that another 10 or more are dodgy.

The Chatroulette web site was created by Andrey Ternovskiy, a 17-year-old high school student in Moscow. Ternovskiy says the concept arose from video chats he used to have with friends on Skype, and that he wrote the first version of Chatroulette in “two days and two nights”. Ternovskiy chose the name “Chatroulette” after watching The Deer Hunter, a 1978 film set in the Vietnam War in which prisoners of war are forced to play Russian roulette.

There are also other sites based on the same principle like Omegle. Bottomline is that with most people accumulating hundreds and hundreds of “facebook friends” and now random strangers trying to hook up online who also occasionally happen to be holding their dick whilst they talk to you. What happened to real friends chatting over a cup of coffee or going out for a drink? What happened to privacy or firming connections with the people we are actually in contact with and part of our lives? Do we really need these random connections and ego strokes or are we just bored, lonely and horny?
