In the United States, Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. I am aware the last sentence implies that independence from the Motherland is a good thing. It’s confusing to me too don’t worry. I’m not entirely convinced American culture has moved in the right direction since 1776, but I am entitled to my opinion. Please do not bomb my city. I believe in democracy. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, drinking beer, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, eating corn dogs, concerts, baseball games, saying “fuck yeah”, family reunions, political speeches and ceremonies.
